Forced Psychiatry

WNUSP advocates against forced psychiatry which is regarded as torture or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment.

The UN Treaty that is directly relevant to this issue is UN Convention on Torture 1984

There are 2 UN Mechanisms that deal with issues around torture: UN Committee On Torture and the Sub Committee on the Prevention of Torture

In addition:

Article 15 of the CRPD outlines freedom from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment:

“No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. In particular, no one shall be subjected without his or her free consent to medical or scientific experimentation.”

Mr Juan Mendez is the United Nations Special Rapporteur for Torture and has been directly addressed by WNUSP.

WNUSP, together with IDA and ENUSP in 2012 made a submission to the United Nations Special    Rapporteur on Torture in Healthcare Settings

Relevant to the User and Survivor Movement are the recommendations of the Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan E. Méndez, from his Report on Torture in the Context of Healthcare, 1 Feb 2013 (UN Doc. A/HRC/22/53) Important recommendation excerpts can be used for advocacy.
